Material from “HOW to STOP RUNAWAY THOUGHTS"
Excerpt 1:
Thinking is somewhat like breathing. You're always doing it. But unless you get
short of breath or someone suggests you focus on your breathing, you forget that
you're doing it. It's the same with your thoughts. You simply don't think about
the fact that you think approximately sixty thousand thoughts a day.
Some thoughts you think are positive, some negative, some neutral, some are
about the past, some about the future, some you obsess on, some come and go and
you take no note, some invite you to feel sad and gloomy, some infuriate you,
and some bring a smile and give you a sense of well-being.
The way you think defines almost every feeling, action, interaction, and
behavior in your life. It is not other people or their actions or what happens
or doesn't happen to you. It is the way you think, the thoughts you choose to
focus on.
Excerpt 2:
One way to control your thoughts instead of allowing them to control you is to
give them a focus. Get busy with a project, pay bills, clean out the
refrigerator, help straighten up your child's room, read a book, refinish a
piece of furniture. Chances are you'll stay focused, and your thoughts won't be
all over the place.
If you feel you can't stop your thoughts from racing, one thing you can hold on
to is a prayer. One woman reads the psalms, another prays her rosary to help
focus and calm those internal churnings.
Repeating a phrase or affirmation can quell racing thoughts. If you can't stop
thinking about how a relative or friend hurt you, you might say, ``I choose to
forgive and move on with my life,'' over, and over, and over. If you're going
through a divorce and you can't seem to stop fighting in your head with your
soon-to-be ex-spouse, repeating an affirmation such as, ``I choose to grow from
this experience and become a better person,'' will help you center yourself and
get control of your runaway thoughts.
